Terrazzo Goes Viral: Leveraging Social Media to Spur the Growth of Terrazzo (and Your Business)
If you’ve worked with terrazzo in some way, shape or form, you’ve likely grown accustomed to the ebb and flow of its demand. Some years it’s in vogue and some years…not so much. Currently, terrazzo is experiencing a big moment and the only thing preventing a greater resurgence (and a subsequent windfall of cash for those who install it) is YOU.
This is not to say you’re fighting against its popularity or that you seek to be less profitable with your terrazzo work, but let’s face it, most of us in the terrazzo business are slow to change. And why should we change? Terrazzo has a long, storied history – one that spans back nearly 10,000 years. It’s safe to say that the medium has endured for a long time and most contractors don’t feel the need to “advertise” too heavily. Either someone wants it, or they don’t, right? Plus, advertising and promoting the product can seem daunting, expensive, time-consuming or all of the above.
Unfortunately, this mistaken belief also stems from the idea that terrazzo is facing stiff competition from cheaper alternatives. It’s possible, but it’s more likely that these other products are marketed more heavily. People are led to believe in the benefits of going with different flooring solutions over another. Doesn’t terrazzo have benefits?
In other words, it’s not (nor has it ever been) a foregone conclusion that if someone needs a floor, they likely don’t need terrazzo. It’s your job to help them reach a different conclusion. Because who better to help anyone understand the many variations, applications, colors and benefits than those in the industry…those who install it?
At this point, you may be in agreement but you’re unsure where to begin. Not to worry. The Brand Constructors recently delivered a presentation to the Southern branch of the NTMA (National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association) on the various social platforms, their respective audiences and, most importantly, how to drum up business and expand awareness for terrazzo. Your target market (younger architects and designers) use these social platforms daily and reference websites for resources like you.
We’ve gone through the trouble of packaging the key takeaways from that presentation for you.
